  • Mary Jane Strong Donnell was born in 1849 in Essa Township near Cookstown, Ontario. She married Elijah Donnell at age 20.
  • The couple initially lived in Alliston, where Elijah operated a general store. This store may have been the origin of the Strong and Donnell business name.
  • Around 1880, Mary Jane and Elijah moved to Barrie, where they became long-time residents. Elijah Donnell later served as Town Clerk of Barrie.
  •  While there’s no direct record of a Strong & Donnell store in Barrie itself, the family’s presence and Elijah’s civic role suggest they were prominent figures in the community.
